600 years of the Verschuijl and Verschoyle family

by Virginia Mason

VERSCHOYLE MASON PUBLICATIONS, WHITEHILL 2001
ISBN: 0-9540759-0-0.

THIS PUBLICATION, containing 320 pages, including extensive charts, maps and illustrations, is the result of research carried out over a period of about twenty years. It has become apparent through this research that all those bearing the names Verschuijl or Verschoyle can trace their origins back to the same family, who lived near Eindhoven in the Netherlands c. 1350-1600.

The material is divided into three main sections: Part I deals with the early history of the family in the Netherlands during the period c.1350-1650. Part II continues the story of those who remained in the Netherlands, whose descendants are the Verschuijl family of today. Part III contains the history of the descendants of Henrik Verschuijl, who settled in Dublin in the early 17th century, and whose descendants now bear the Verschoyle surname.

In addition, there are appendices listing various spellings of the name, streets named after the Verschoyle family, references to the name ‘Verschoyle’ in fiction, and publications by members of the Verschuijl and Verschoyle families. There is also an extensive bibliography and index of names.

Extract from Review, Brabantse Leeuw, November 2001
‘De opzet van het boek is voorbeeldig. De genealogie is waar mogelijk op een harmonieuze manier geintegreerd in de locale, lands- en internationale geschiedenis. Er is goed gebruik gemaakt van archiefbronnen en gepubliceerd onderzoek.’

Extract from Review, The Irish Genealogist, Vol. II, No. 1, 2002
‘This is one of the best examples of a recently-published family history seen for quite some time. Thoroughly researched over a lengthy period, attractively presented with numerous charts, maps, manuscripts and copies of portraits and photographs, the narrative makes interesting reading.’
